Lisa started studying singing when she was 14. It was clear even before then that her singing had exceptional natural beauty and musicality. But teachers did not know what to do with her: She had a nasty break in her voice that no one could fix. The classical teachers simply had her sing repertoire that only lay above the break. The more stylistically balanced teachers tried to keep her below the break. There were times that she decided she would not sing, but she was always drawn back to singing.
But then she came across a method of singing that she had never heard of. It was developed by Seth Riggs and is now known across the world as Speech Level Singing (SLS).
Seth Riggs and the advanced SLS teachers gave Lisa exercises that quickly and easily eliminated her break. Also, the technique made physiological and acoustic sense to her. Lisa knew almost immediately that she wanted to teach this “miracle” method to others.
In 2000 Lisa became a SLS teacher. She is now an advanced SLS teacher, teaching singers throughout the world and giving them the tools to find their true and best voice. She taught at The Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, co-founded by Sir Paul McCartney. After that she taught at Flat Rock Playhouse which is the state theatre of North Carolina. Her studio is now based in the rich musical and artistic community of Asheville, North Carolina. There she teaches face-to-face lessons to regional singers and lessons over Skype and the phone to singers world- wide.
Lisa’s students come to her because they are serious about being the best singers and performers they can be. And Lisa is serious about being the very best teacher. She doesn’t teach from a cookbook; every lesson is custom designed to the singer’s specific needs. Within that context she is known for her compassion, encouragement and humor.
